The most tantalizing news to come out of Zanardi's time at the 2012 London Paralympics--at least in terms of auto racing--could come to reality in 2013.

"He told a reporter yesterday for me to watch out because he wants to race at the Indy 500 next year, said Vasser, "and he wasn't kidding and that's not how we're taking it."

With hand control technology having advanced greatly in recent years, fielding Zanardi at Indy in IndyCar's new Dallara DW12 chassis is now a genuine option.

"I've got to get him in a car at Indy next year," Vasser explained. "I spoke to Chip [Ganassi] and said we need to make it happen between the two of us before somebody else steps in to run him; he belongs driving for me or Chip or in a car we run together. I'm serious. Stay tuned."

If he does show up at the brickyard next May, any driver who dismisses his presence as some kind of publicity stunt, does so at their own peril.
