If you do it off the car, you honestly should be fine. The wear item is the o-ring, which you replace. The problem with removing them when on the car is there is very little room to work with and you can barely see that part of the turbo (at least on a 1er). I ended up using the hard portion of the upper pipe as a handle and it bent, but eventually it came loose.
Car is running absolutely great. Only been a couple thousand miles, but zero issues.
