George Washington was only 22 when he took on the French in 1754. The treaty of surrender he signed was written in French, which he could not read, and there is some question as to whether he understood everything that was in it. In particular, the treaty said that de Jumonville was "assassinated." Washington's translator may not have disclosed (or understood) that part.

Washington expected a rebuke when he got back to Virginia, but his superiors blamed the defeat on a lack of reinforcements, rather than any deficiencies in strategy on his part.
