Airbags aren't affected at all. The curtains should pop out between the pillar and headliner (that's how they are on most cars I've seen). The headliner itself has nothing to do with the airbags. When you pull it, the airbags are still attached to the car. On a previous car which was unfortunately totalled, the side airbags deployed and the wrapped headliner had zero impact.
