Any pointers on how to rip the HDD would be good, in the meantime I am looking up how to install Linux on my laptop (Win XP x86) or PC (Win 7 x64) and which version is best.

Excellent, can't wait to hear your results. I've been meaning to make an image of the drive in my car just in case it crashes once I'm out of warranty.
