As a former AP2 owner who routinely regrets ever selling it, I would definitely drive one first and make sure, to the extent you can, whether it's unmolested. It's still a 10 year old car.
As much as I loved owning one and do honestly regret selling it, I really don't think I'd ever consider paying what the clean ones cost these days. For many people the wanting will be better than the having. Especially if you're lusting after a car that could be 15+ years old and has had numerous owners.
