Just to follow up on this - they (including the on on our cars) don't really muffle the exhaust. There was someone on here who deleted his resonator and it made the car a raspy mess, but didn't increase the volume.
Just do it right - you may need more than one muffler, and that's fine, use a good resonator/muffler combo if you must. I don't recommend driving the car without either.
