Tony beat me to it

BMW made a lot of noise about the N52 lightweight magnesium alloy engine in the 330i, but so far as I understand it they concluded that it was not robust enough for turbo charging.

As a result the 335i was built using an entirely new, heavier, but stronger engine block.
