I'm an internal IT support tech... I've worked for the same company for 12 years nearly. We're a financial services company doing things like shareholder registration, fund administration, pension fund administration, etc etc. We recently got bought by an Aussie company just over a year ago.

Started off on the Service Desk. If you work for the company & have a problem with your PC, I'd be the first person to speak to.

After a few months, I moved onto desktop support... so if the service desk guys couldn't fix it, I'd be the one who'd come to your desk and do a more in-depth investigation to fix your problem... or doing desk moves, new PC roll outs, etc.

After 8 years, I moved onto server & application support. We don't deal with users directly so much anymore... which is nice as some people can drive you insane. I know not everyone is literate with computers, but some people were so ridiculous it would drive you to drink. I'm now responsible for making sure all the servers are up & running, and making sure the applications that run on said servers are working properly.

Most of the stuff we deal with is really old and underspec'd, but people expect it to work like the latest and greatest. I often feel like the IT equivalent of a mechanic who's been given a 40 year old Lada and been tasked with making it as good as a Bugatti Chiron.
