Hello everyone, I am at a loss here. I have a 2011 328i and have a very strange, loud grinding/howling noise. It only happens with the AC off and when I turn the AC on, it goes away. It has a new compressor in it since the swash plate went out on the old one. The noise started about a month after the compressor, but the AC blows ice and cools quickly after sitting. Everything under the car is tight and doesn't rattle (had it in the air with someone revving and the noise was present). The noise is prominent inside the car, but cannot here it coming from anywhere specific. I held the recirculation door thinking it was that rattling around, but that didn't change anything either. I changed the idler pulley and tensioner and that didn't make a difference. Stethoscope doesn't reveal anything (PS pump, alternator, compressor, block, head) that sounds abnormal. A side note, and not sure if it's related, but my mpg went from about 22-23mpg around town to around 18-19mpg. Please help!
