Ticking, etc.
I haven't read all of the posts, so forgive me, but here's my story of the dreaded "ticking" sound:
First heard it about a year ago, roughly three months after buying the car via the CPO program (It's an '06 330i). Brought the car to Tom Bush BMW (Jacksonville, FL) and had the valve lifters replaced. Dealership was quick to take care of the issue.
Ticking noise returned roughly 6 months later. Brought the car to BMW of Newport, where I now live, and was told that valve lifters are first "troubleshooting" step, followed by replacement of the cylinder head if lifter replacement didn't solve problem. Basically, the dealer told me that this is a known issue and the lifter/cylinder head replacement is the two-step process BMW is using to fix the issue. All repairs were covered by the CPO program.
Both dealerships admitted that this is a recognized problem, so I'm surprised that others aren't sure how to handle the issue.
Now if I coulld only get the wheels to stop squeeking...
