I got used to a high cruising highway engine speed in the M3, but I hauled ass through North Alabama. 4000 RPM doesn't feel quite as bad when 8000 is your redline. I try not to permanently cruise at higher than half of the engine's operating speeds. This is simply an OCD tactic and not grounded in any logic. So M3 idled at 1000, redline at 8000, that's 7000 working RPM, so 4500 crusing. 328 idles at 600, redline at 7000, so 3600 or 4000 rpm is as high as I would want to cruise.
