Majority of the time an engine will have a spigot bush or bearing and the pilot shaft will be part of the gearbox input shaft, however bmw have done it differently here and the input shaft actually has a hollow area for the pilot shaft to locate. (shown in the picture above)

Yes this is true, they revered back to the pilot bearing being within the flywheel on the N55 motor.
