Weird, those bell housing bolts are huge (most of them anyways) so I'm impressed that they broke. Consider yourself lucky with manifold studs, I had a similar experience removing an exhaust stud, the head just twisted off because it was so soft and stuck. Luckily a hardware store in town had two M7 nuts so I was able to jam nut it out.
