I had my transfer case start whining earlier this year in my 2008 328xi at 52k miles. My indy had a spare, so I just had him swap it out at the time since it was more cost effective to install the new one vs tearing down my old one and figuring out what was wrong and fixing it. Paid around $700 total for labor and parts. Ended up selling the car shortly thereafter, so I never got around to looking into it much.
Realizing this has no helpful info other than just another '08 328xi having the same issue. Granted it didn't fail completely, which I could have let happen without consequence as you found out. Wonder if xDelete would have been a better option for you vs pulling the drive shaft and everything.
