N55 is superior to the N54 in every way except tuning ability to unsafe levels. Automobile Mag did a dyno test between the two and the N55 puts out more torque("kick in the pants") then the N54 while the N54 put out more horsepower.
So, it's a wash in terms of performance. N55 is also a more fuel efficient engine due to the addition of Valvetronic and implementing a single twin-scroll turbocharger. The judges were misinformed
