Not necessarily needed (you only need a VIN for BMW Online which has it active on CIC)
I can say from my experience:
My car originally had this : 609, 620, 644.
I retrofitted CIC and Combox, and made my own SSD. Added : 614 , 6vc, 6NR, 6NF, 6FL and coded (and still code) the CIC and Combox using SSD.
My CAS and NFRM is still the original FA..
