you can do an awful lot of wrenching in your driveway with just a jack and jackstands.
there's zero reason to go rent a lift to do basic brake and suspension work.
the only thing you really need one for is if you're planning on dropping the drivetrain with the cradle.
I've replaced transmissions in many a thing with nothing more than jacks and stands.
