Its like close, short course racing, typically only in the 1st 2 gears. The barriers are cones, so ifyou don't make your line right, bump a cone, usually you'll be just fine.
You can always just show up and watch. Chances are if you ask nicely you can go for a ride with a driver so you get the idea of how it works.
If you show up day of and decide you want to register, typically its only a couple bucks more.
You should definitely go if only to watch on the first day - they are a BLAST.
