Definitely could be a cable issue then, I use a J2534-1 interface for coding instead of a K+DCAN cable for quick jobs and an ICOM for more advanced stuff. Never had to bridge 7-8 on any year E90/E60 (I've worked with 2005 builds all the way up 2012). Same with Mini's prior to the R55/R56 chassis, only needed an adapter for the eariler R50/R52 chassis.

I only needed an adapter for the E46/E39/E53 chassis.

So that's been my experience.
