Whether or not it's an N52 or N54, BMW engines have a high compression ratio and require an octane level higher than 87 - a minimum of 91, with 93 preferred. Avoid lugging the engine (low speeds at high loads) and you should be ok, but even with the computer compensating for the lower octane level, some detonation could occur (also called "pinging"), which is not good for your engine.
