I submitted a request to BMW Customer Relations on bmwusa.com and got this message in response, so what we can see here is that BMW is aware of the problem

Unfortunately, the 3.0 version of the Apple iPod software is currently not compatible with the BMW. BMW is currently researching to see what is able to be done with the software levels to assist with the compatibility to the iPod. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please stay in touch with www.bmwusa.com and you dealer for any further information as it becomes available.
