You saw the same thing happen to Cadillac and to some extent, longtime mainstays of high end retail like Bergdorfs / Barney's (RIP) and Neimans. They were oh so careful to not upset their existing client base, they tended to shun the younger crowd.
BMW could have been in the same position if they hadn't turned a blind eye to their auto enthusiast customer base and lost their way. Just sayin'
