Update. I had a peek at my intake valves due to alternator failure (
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387276 , post #49) and they were blackened but not bad at all! I now have 82k miles on car. The oil catch can appears to work pretty well, so I will check back on them in another 25k miles or so.
