I don't trust my fabrication skills enough to do that, would just using something like this work or does it completely defeat the purpose??

it kind of defeats the purpose. The small 1/8 is going to act like a restriction orifice. I went to 1/4 because of issues I was having and have heard others having. Some peoples seem to be fine. The hole in the manifold is smaller than a 1/8" iirc
