My 2006 X3 150BHP diesel used to do exactly what you guys are describing. I did a lot of research at the time to try and find out what it was, i found a few threads on various BMW forums of people with the same problem, but unfortunately nobody seemed to know what it was and the threads died out. Tried different fuels but couldn't seem to get rid of it, but i think it was worse when using Tesco's fuel.
Seem to remember someone saying it could be something to do with the flywheel, but can't remember what though.
