I think that the crystallization on the vent is because that people overfill the tank. There is a BMW bulletin that mention that overfilling the tank may damage the tank.
I only put DEF in the passive tank when I get the LOW DEF (900 miles countdown) light. I then add only 2.5 gals at a time.
