It is possible to get the 2012 maps for the CIC navigation (hard drive based) and upgrade without seeing your dealer. You'll need the 2012 maps and the FSC code based on your VIN, both of which can be obtained for MUCH less than your dealer would charge.
Two sources that I know are on this forum who can help are Patrys@BimmerTech and *******. I used the latter last week to upgrade the 2009 maps on my car; I had the code very quickly, downloaded and burned the DVD images (you'll need three dual-layer dvd blanks), and upgraded my system with no trouble.
