Very situationally dependent as to what the value in trading in is. I traded my M235i in on a GTI. The BMW was worth more than the new VW cost, the VW dealer was owned by the same group as the BMW dealer and they wanted it quite badly. So got a very good trade-in, completely negated the sales tax on the new one, and got a huge discount on the VW to boot - thanks DieselGate!

Also saved the fun and games of trying to sell a $40K high-performance car privately. Cheap cars I sell privately.

But you have to have a car that dealer wants to buy to sell. In most cases, anything old and cheap is going straight to auction.
