Basically they changed what the base stock oil is, so now it's a different formulation. If you want to get technical, the previous M1 0w40 was a PAO and Visom (Group III) based oil. The new M1 FS 0w40 is a PAO and GTL oil. GTL is gas to liquid, as in made from natural gas like what Shell/Pennzoil has been marketing as its PurePlus technology.
The question we don't have an answer to is if the new formula flat out doesn't meet BMW LL-01 at all anymore, or if ExxonMobil just haven't gotten it approved by BMW yet.

Weird. The new dealer (Shell) oil is based on that methodology as well. I agree, perhaps they haven't done the test quite yet. If I were making an oil product and one company was taking a while to do the testing, I wouldn't hold up selling the new formula just for that.
