Lol, personalised plates can be pretty cheap in other states, not every state rips off it's citizens as much as NSW.
I.e. in victoria for personalised plates you only pay $300 up front and after that the annual rego cost is the same as non-personalised ones. The system here where you have to fork out annually is sheer BS.
