For normal maintenance operations not necessary but I would still put a full charge on the
battery beforehand . The big danger is when you are updating the software in the whole car.

Maintenance items should need the extra voltage.
Programming that take a long time and draws a lot of current you need one.
As in total car update.
Coding not necessary as long as you are doing a long session.

If you are working on the car a long time and the car is awake it can drain a weak battery.
Check voltage before and after working on the car.
