What year is the gl350 and what year was the x5d? Makes a big difference as the transmissions and engines changed around over the last several years.
I didn't ever drive a gl but I drove the touareg 3.0tdi and the x5d, the touareg seemed to have a bit tighter suspension but it was clear the x5d was the better suv, as it ought to be as it was quite a bit more expensive. The gl is a gigantic suv so 28 mpg is pretty good.
