Ended up changing both front top mounts and although the bearings are mounted in a rubber bushing they were so bad you could tilt them side to side 
Fitted the new top mounts and there was no play and it cured the horrible knocking I had. |
was the knocking like this,,if going over say pebbles,,did the knock quicken up as suspension went up and down,,and did it sound non metalic?
