One of the things you don't realize in the military at first is that if you work in signals intelligence, you can leverage that security clearance when you get out.
In my own case, I worked at it for 25 years and when I retired, could've joined the "beltway bandit" community but was not interested -- I didn't want to have anything to do with it anymore.
