That says it all right there, when its applied the clutch is disengaged which is why you dont hear anything cause power train is disconnected. Once you release the pedal you now have uneven clamping forces on the disc with missing/broken springs which is the metallic clinging noises you hear. Any competent trans shop should be able to replace a clutch for about 300-600 labor.

This is where I'm also leaning as well. Id start there. You'll know real quick if it isnt the clutch and you'll already be in the right area to see the non internal trans parts.
