So after trouble-shooting on and off for the last few days...
The car was prevented from going into sleep mode. Every time it tried to go into sleep mode (start/stop bushbutton LED would go off, then on again and the LPFP would prime.)
I started pulling out fuses to see if anything was preventing the car from going to sleep. I got to fuse #31 and the car finally went to sleep. Seems like fuse #31 on my car is for the CD player (BMW Professional, no iDrive.)
Now I can drive the car w/o fear of draining the battery, but I will have to start looking into what the issue with the CD player is.
I've heard that the CD player doesn't always go to sleep and that you have to push the START/STOP button twice when exiting car etc. I always either lock it via the key fob or door handle. I'll have to look at a wiring diagram for the radio.
