Can only check Oil Level while running?

I pulled a code using ProTools that was for the oil sensor. Because I have no history of the e90 and the VCG is leaking, I went to check oil level with the BC switch. But can I can only see while running? I’m skittish about ramps and jacks to change the oil but also don’t want to run out with low oil to tow it to the shop to change.

I looked into oil suction just to do a quick change, but due to no dipstick, seems like it won’t work on the e90. Any other way to check the oil level without running?

I think you can only check it while running, and while warmed up. It takes some time before it will give you a reading.

The owners manual describes the static oil test check using the BC stalk.

It said after 6.5mi of driving or running at idle. Did not see anything about engine off and ignition on. Bc and stalk doesn’t change the display unless running. Did I miss something?

Thanks

I wish I knew where I'd found this information, but I have notes.

If you put the car into the run position, but don't start it (keep foot off brake pedal) and go into the oil menu it should indicate "OK" if it is safe to start.

Then you can start the car on a level surface and once it is down to normal idle, select the oil level menu again and hold the idle at 1250rpm for a couple of minutes until the level appears.

Just realized I needed to have my door closed. Said add 1qt so I did and oil check says “Ok”. Have not run yet, but at least it seems like the oil sensor is working.

Appreciate the info on how to check while not running 👍
