Tire Lifetime Expectancy on XI cars
I posted something to the 5series forums but it's mostly dead there..
Realizing that I am not comparing apples to apples, those of you with XI cars -- how many miles do your tires typically last? backstory, I have a 2007 530Xit and my rear tires, especially inner walls are shot after ~12,000 miles: I am running: Front: 245/40/18 Rear: 275/35/18 Tires: Kuho Ecsta 4X II XL

Provide some details dude.
When was your last alignment? (only laser, never have a manual alignment done) How often do you check tire pressure? How many bodies to you keep in the trunk? Do you have any suspension mods? Because of camber, inner shoulder would probably wear the fastest. But the xi rear end is the same as RWD rear end, and there isn't a systemic issue I've heard of excessive rear end tire wear. My tires last a disappointingly long time. I want them to wear out so I can buy new ones! Last edited by ewicky; 05-23-2019 at 01:04 PM.. Reason: grammer |

Performance tires don't last that long .
If you are using runflats even less. I could barely get 30k off the performance tires on my e46 and those were real tires not rft's. And the wearing on the inside rears is typical BMW wear pattern with negative camber in the back. |

12kmi is too short of life. Something is wrong.
That tire is barely "performance". And it has a treadwear rating of 420. Honestly the camber shouldn't be so bad that you wear the insides like that. It's just enough that you wouldn't see the outsides wear in the back, unless all you did was cornering. Front outsides wearing is usually normal. I couldn't tell you what's wrong though. Maybe get the alignment checked by someone else? Maybe you have play in some rear bushings that drops the alignment out of spec as soon as you start driving? IDK But to answer your original question, no that is not normal for a regular tire like that. Last edited by ewicky; 05-23-2019 at 04:42 PM.. Reason: spelling mistake |

There’s no racing, burnouts what so ever. It’s a massive AWD wagon with only 255hp. I had the car in the shop and rear suspension was inspected and eccentric bolts were replaced - everything else was tight, no replacement recommended.
Before the bushing hysteria, does anyone know if these cars can go down to 1 degree of negative camber? |

I have the wagon with awd tires wear seems pretty much like
all other cars . The wheels are 17's and not low profile . Since they are square I rotate them about every 10k. Conti DWS. Its a nice all around tire. Had the E46 staggered coupe sport setup got tired of buying 1k worth of tires every 35k and down to nothing on the back at that mileage. Yeah they really hold and are blast for the first 25k. |

The current set up I have is fairly square.
I just measured my tires. F: 8-9/32 (uniform wear) R: 4/32 (standard sloped wear with more wear on the inside). I’m suspecting an alignment issue. Anyone have alignment specs for their cars with good wear? Last edited by elons335i; 05-23-2019 at 05:50 PM.. |

Didn't have any problems with our E91 xi.
sounds like you have a toe problem in the rear. although 12k miles could be a lot or nothing depending on what tire it is. The only tire I've had wear out that fast had a TW of 160, and that car had an aggressive alignment. |

I got sick of the inner edge of my rear tires wearing out very quickly (<10k miles!), so when I installed my H&R coilover kit, I went with alignment settings to maximize tire life since the car spends about 95% of its time on long highway trips. Now my tires wear perfectly evenly all the way across both front and rear. Note: I had to buy aftermarket camber and toe arms for the rear because the stock ones won't work with the lower ride height.
My REAR alignment settings are: 0.5 degrees negative camber - If you want to check yourself, or especially if you're ever going to do your own suspension work, buy a digital angle gauge. You can compress each rear corner by using a jack under the brake disc, then use the gauge to get the camber down to the tenth of a degree. Do it with the wheel off so you can stick the gauge to the brake disc hat (NOT the rotor braking surface). 3/32" toe in - That's only 3/64" on each side, but that's enough to give the car perfectly neutral handling. My FRONT alignment settings are: 0.2-0.3 degrees negative camber 1/32" toe out - This means only 1/64" per side. It took me a while to align the car, with many setups that didn't work, especially on snow (I did it this past winter). Now, the car is set up perfectly for being a highway cruiser that can still handle great in the twisties due to the awesome H&R coilovers. |

Interesting. Do you know if stock suspension can be adjusted down to 0.5 degree? That would be my ideal situation. My front tires are like new, in the rear it looks I’m running a [mad]stance[yo]. It needs to be corrected from the stupidity of the OE setting. |
