Dab retrofit options
My wife would like dab radio in her 2006 E87 1 Series. Does anyone know what the options are and how to go about it?
I know this is an E90 forum but I'm guessing the options and installation will be fairly similar. Nick |

Think I'm going to go for this. Its £179 and converts the existing stereo to dab and keeps everything looking factory.
http://www.autodab.com/Default.aspx Its been talked about on this forum before and appears to be what bmw use when retrofitting dab. |

Well time for an update!
I bought the autodab system ages ago for my wifes 2006 E87 1 Series but as it was a Christmas present she had to wait! Anyway today i thought I'd have a little look at installing it. After watching a few YouTube videos on how to remove the dash trim, head unit and aircon controls i thought I'd dive in. Well after a few minutes it all went pear shaped. I tried gently prizing off the aluminium effect trim that goes along the top of the dash and it all seemed to pop of rather nicely until I looked at the back and found every single clip had broke off and all the retaining pins were still firmly in the dash. After that I didnt even bother with the rest as I'd probably just end up breaking even more stuff. Time to source a new piece of trim and then let my mechanic mate do the rest. The part I'm after is 51457127176 so if anyone knows where I can get one that is in great condition I'd like to hear from you! I've emailed Quarry Motors and someone on ebay at the moment. I bloody hate trying to remove trim. Why does it have to be so brittle! |

Well, I got a new dash trim piece and the Autodab was installed last night. Just been out and had a play with it and I cant for the life of me get any more than 7 stations! When scanning it says it hs found 66 stations and that they are all available, but when I scroll through them there is only 7. Tried clearing and scanning again and also tried a factory reset and starting again but still only getting Absolute, BBCR1, BBC6M, Classic, LBC, SmoothEX and TlkSport2.
I have been on to the Autodab website and submitted a technical support request but in the meantime if any of you guys know anything about these systems and how to set them up then let me know. |

Turn your lights off!! Have you got drls?
The LED Lghts play havoc with DAB signals. You need to use ferrite clamps on all the signal wires to LEDs if fitted to headlights. |

Technical have got back to me and its all sorted now. Its a great system and I'm pretty impressed with it. Very easy to use (once you know how!). The only down side is the operating instructions as they are pretty poor and dont seem to cover everything, hence my email to technical. The response I got though was swift and went through what I had to do in plain English step by step instructions.
Just given my wife a lesson on how to use it and she seems pretty impressed with it. |

Had a quick look at the USB version in the link. Sorry if this is a silly question, but where do you plug in the usb? In the one between the drivers seats under the arm rest, or the one in the glove box? Or is there one on the back of the head unit??
I have the pronav and radio, but only have the USB in the glovebox, I have the aux 3.5mm jack under the arm rest. |

I didnt do it. I was going to but just ended up breaking a bit of dash trim when getting it off, so I let my mate do it. He said the only tricky bit was running the aerial cable round the back of the glove box. The rest of it was dead straight forward. Once you've got the aircon controls and the head unit out it's all just plug and play. Getting the head unit and air con unit out is easy enough. I was just worried I was going to break more plastic bits. There are plenty of youtube videos on how to do it.
