Mobil-1 vs Shell Helix

I just bought an E90 330i 2011 EuroSpec, BMW agent here uses Shell Helix, but some people are advising to use Mobil-1 saying its much better, and reduces engine noise. anybody gone through this comparison before

I thought Mobil1 is not LL-01 approved except for 0W-40 or something, imho skip all the bs and speculation and use BMW oil while under warranty.

Be careful, there is a Mobil 1 0w40 oil full synthetic (with a very good ester base I understand--better than most synthetics) that is LL-01-spec. But there are plenty of other Mobil 1 synthetics that don't meet LL-01 spec.

I use it for my top-off oil

mobil 1 just isn't what it used to be, they have dropped dramatically the amount of zinc in their oil and as we all know zinc is crucial for turbocharge applications.

I'm running Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 and loving it! I'm in europe though. 10 C lower oil temps than with Castrol Edge.

This is an interesting point right there.

Any experts on oil quality? Please don't make me go to bobistheoilguy and try to figure things out through all that technical stuff they spout over there.....

Just use Castrol 0w30 fully sync (unlike many M1 sync oils)., approved, and widely available

I know on my other car forum people are sick into oil sending their samples out every oil change to blackstone. They live on the bobistheoilguy website, and Mobil1 is not held in high regard there, despite being factory fills for GM, Porsche, AMG, etc.

Hey, with a rebate it's $39.95 at GM, and it's good enough for me, the car came with it.

I've been running my 2006 E90 330i on a steady diet of Mobil 1 0W40 every 7.5K. Just sent in last sample from 48K to Blackstone and their report came back AAA. Lower wear than average and oil in fine condition. Run the 0W40 in my '04 X5 with same results. The other perfectly fine alternative is BMW's 5W30 (which is Castrol Syntec European).
