Sell "as is" or repair before selling

Hey all

The time has come to sell my 2011 335 Xdrive. I replaced the clutch 10,000km with a spec stage 2 and it was great until my wife glazed it over on a long hill with stop and go. Now, on cold start the pedal feels fine but after a half hour or so of city driving the pedal goes all mushy and engagement point is right at the top of the pedal in first gear.

My question is, would you guys recommend replacing the clutch before selling, or selling the car "as is" WITH a disclaimer that the clutch needs replacement. I'm not trying to dump a bad clutch on an unsuspecting buyer. Obviously this would command a lower price but I'm thinking it would still be more than what I'd get on a dealer trade in. Opinions welcome Thanks!

Mushy pedal, bad engagement? Your slave cylinder probably is bad. Sounds like it won't hold required pressure to the throwout bearing.
Pedal feel has little to do with glazed disk or flywheel.

Unless we're talking about a $1k+ plus repair on a $1k car always fix before selling.

+1 Glazed clutch will "chatter" during engagement/disengagement. So you can't get a smooth shift. If it's mushy, it sounds like the slave cylinder.

Unless you're just trying to blame the wife for a reason to replace the car. Perfectly fine as well.

You can recoup that cost from repairing it. A brand new clutch in a manual vehicle for sale is about as good, or better, than new tires.

My father-in-law works at a dealership. He recommends to just turn it in. If you're going private sell, then I'd fix it to get more money out of it.

If you're doing a trade-in, don't repair it. The dealer (for any brand) can fix it for a lot less $$ than you can.

That car is a ticking time-bomb. Reduce the price and dump it immediately.

PM me.

Just trade it in. Keep it moving. We will hear about the issue when the next buyer gets it and finds their way here.

It doesn't show up until after an hour of driving, which means it won't show up during the test drive. So what's the problem here?

If you are trading it in, I wouldn't bother.

If you are selling it to a private party, do this:
1) Find out what your highest trade in price is.
2) Determine private party value.
3) 2 - 1 is your wiggle room

If a private party is willing to buy the car as is, then let them. If a private party tries to beat you down past the value in 1, you can say you will get more for trade in and anchor your price floor. At the end of the day, if you have to spend $1000 to get $1,100 more on your car, I wouldn't bother for such a small increase.

Your clutch disk should be fine, your problem may only be the slave cylinder, have it checked out by an indy shop if you are not mechanically inclined. They may save you a couple hundred dollars before you replace the whole clutch for no reason.
