N54 Track Oil Pressure Issues? Also some tuning questions

Alright .. so I'm leaning towards modding my car to be a recreational track build. 2007 335I with factory oil cooler.

From what I'm reading, upgraded radiators can help, additional or bigger oil coolers can help, upgraded FMIC.

I am in northeast PA and car is currently stock aside from charge pipe and MHD stage 1 plus, I plan on adding catless DPs and 7.5" FMIC (have them just need to install). I'm not trying to be a super serious race car driver right now, I just want to have my weekend car be able to go to the track and have fun!

Here are my current questions:

1. I just flashed to MHD stage 1 .. when going to the track .. what kind of tune are you guys running? MHD Stage 2+ or lower more conservative tunes. I am assuming the lower the PSI the less heat? or is it negligible?

2. Will my stock oil cooler be ok or should I do the upgrade?

3. What oil should I be running and should I over fill it?

4. I need clarification on oil starvation. From my understanding that can happen either from low oil pressure, or oil not being picked up from the pan, and in the case below from making left hand turns or hard braking?

This guy Asbjorn is saying there is an inherent oil pressure issue .. to me it sounds like a flaw .. is anyone else aware of this and have you combated it at all .. or is this guy overreacting? https://*********************/thread...hpde-use.7143/

"Also do not ignore one of the largest hidden issues with the N54 on track - loss of oil pressure through left hand corners. People dont realize the issue is there because the N54 does not come with an oil pressure sensor."

and "A baffle wont solve the oil pressure issue. The problem is mainly there when trail braking into left hand turns. It also happens in long braking zones. Most people are not aware because they dont measure oil pressure. Suddenly the rod bearings just go. Its the same on the N55. Again look at what they did on the S55 and M2 N55. Thats the solution, and the GTS goes even further. Other than that, the only thing that is known to work is the accusump."

Lower psi/less power - less heat. Oil temp will be your limiting factor.
I switched to thicker oil 5w-40 because of high heat on track and was trying to "play" with overfilling, but I didn't find or figure a definitive amount.

ICYMI bimmerworld detailed their 335i track project build. Video review as well.

Thanks. Yea i saw that video a few times. Still haven’t been able to definitively find answers on oil starvation.

As for lower psi lower heat i get that, but still wonder what people run in terms of tune.

Maybe u overheat or don’t overheat just as equally with mhd stage 2+ vs 1

Really trying to wrap my head around how people are saying oil pan baffles won’t help oil starvation problems. That one is puzzling me.

For reference, I usually go to NJMP or Watkins Glen.

Oil temp: I started out tracking on the stock oil cooler with the FTP oil thermostat valve, MHD stage 2+. The oil temp quickly rises about a few laps in, I could not complete a full 20 min session. so I upgraded it to an Evolution Racewerks sport oil cooler, that helped but still I see temps rise much higher than I feel comfortable. I have the ER upgraded kit coming to add another oil cooler to the driver side as well. I feel like this will resolve it.

Oil starvation: I've gotten conflicting feedback based on folks experience and decided to upgrade the oil pressure sensor to the nexsys kit so that I can log oil pressure andale the determination myself. If I find that oil pressure is an issue, I plan to install an accusump as I "feel" like it's a better solution than baffled oil pan, and in some ways easier.

Oil fill: I usually overfill by .5-.75 qt, I have no proof to back up this but it makes me feel better knowing the level is higher in the pan then it would be on the factory level.
