What happens when an E90 w/N52 overheats
Since most of them have no temp gage, will the light / warning come up only when in the equivalent red zone of a temp gage? Is it more gradually?

Not sure if if comes up gradually, but I do know that a thermometer warning pops up on the dash. If its yellow, then you can drive the car still, but not too fast. If the light is red then pull over and shut off the engine and call for a tow to the dealer.

the manual says that you'll get a yellow warning first (you can still drive though). The red warning will come up if the temp gets too high to drive the car safely.

Also the temp gauge that the E46 had wasnt so great it was buffered so it basically showed dead center till it started to get to hot then it move to the red area, no way to tell if it was running slightly hot.
