Can you get 1000 miles from a tank?

I have seen people say they can from their 320D Efficient Dynamics, so i thought i would see what i could do on a trip to Yorkshire and back yesterday, well, I was quite suprised to see that after 467 miles, i still had just over half a tank. on the way up, average speed was 72 on cruise, and on the way home i took a more sedate 62mph. journey time funnily was about the same 4hrs.

So in short, i think that 1000 miles is quite easily possible for the ED!

In todays high fuel price world, i just though anyone thinking of one for a co car should deffo look at one of these!! if not just for the 13% BIK rate!

boring MPG thread over.

Your car should be able to do more once a bit more loose. So it can only get better yet.

there is a time and a place though, a 500 mile round trip for work on all motorways, whats the point in it costing me money? leave in enough time so not to have to rush and not get stressed with knobheads sitting in the middle/fast lane! i got home uber relaxed last night..

Agree with this. I left for a meeting today, having to go round the M25. It was wet and I had loads of time.

Managed 23mpg! *

* In the M6, not the ED!!!

1000 miles would use up 4 tanks, at £73 a pop, that's some thought isn't it.

Sometimes I miss my old 520d!.

I was just thinking the same thing! Never got more than 260 out of mine but with a high mileage European trip very close it will be interesting to see what I get.

If you are on a mission to see how far you can go on one tank, you could probably pull 1,000 miles out of a 330d.

But then you would be:
- driving at 45-50mph
- no air-con
- probably do it on a European motorway, because of less traffic

What the hell I got 400 from my 320d last tank and was actually happy with it!

EDIT: It did include 80 miles at approx 140mph on a private runway near the M40 on the day of the Gaydon show. With about 15 other cars that were also at the show.

It's nice how the owners of these runways let you just have a play with your car

Also I have a non-ED model (2006) which is about 10mpg worse than the new 180 bhp 320d ED

Also a "tank" for me is just under 60 litres.. Just filled up from 15m range last night and it cost me £87 in shell v-power.

Ditto. And mine is an ED model. I'm sat at 420 miles and a tank full of fumes as I type this.

However, I do spend all day up and down the hills of Sheffield in stop/start traffic. If ever I get on a run the difference is amazing.

The proper Efficient Dynamic model is detuned to 163bhp so to get under the magic 110co2's. most newer ones have some of the ED technologies on them though. at least you dont have to put up with shit 16" alloys like mine! non upgradable too!

550 BEST from 325d Auto

Out of interest, can anyone explain in laymans terms the tax implication on business use fuel?

The car will be leased by me personally, but the co. will part pay for the lease

I doubt it, certainly not based on today's technology.

One of the key highlights of the M1 Abrams is it's Gas Turbine engine, yet is still only manages around 265 miles operational range before refuelling. It has a 1,900 litre gas tank, so my guess is that's not a fantastic MPG.

Despite that, as this Wikipedia article suggest, it is pretty fucking fly:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Abrams

Despite the disheartening news about the M1 Abrams, lets not forget that it is a Main Battle Tank meaning it has to be tough and heavily armoured, plus its armed to the teeth and has a lot of optional extras.

I've recently done a little bit of research into more economical tanks and although I've not found one that has an operational range of 1000 miles, there are some MBT's that will get closer to 500.

Take the Leopard 2 for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopard_2

As it's German and therefore equipped with the military equivalent of 'Efficient Dynamics' it actually achieves about 340 miles from only 1,200 litres of fuel. You'll be pleased to note it also features a twin turbo diesel engine, not some fancy gas bollocks for hippies. Proof really that proper engines are still better.

I expect like everything, there is a tradeoff though and some might say that the Abrams should have the 'extras' to fuck a Leopard up royally. Some would be American though, because that's a fucking stupid opinion. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE outside of Texas knows that the Leopard 2 is the best 'all round' tank in the world.

Lets look at the facts - both have basically the same gun, which is a German design. WTF were the Yanks thinking there? Who knows. Anyway, in actual fact the Germans have actually adapted most of their Leopards to use a later revision of the same gun, meaning in terms of armaments the Leopard has more basic stopping power.

Sorry I've digressed. In short, I doubt you will get 1000 miles from a tank, or not a Main Battle Tank at least. Even despite the lack of side and rear armour nowadays (a fully armoured King Tiger would have done less than 100 miles total range) I still can't see it being a big priority for the worlds governments to spend their money on. Shame really.

Regards
Matt
