Normal Operating Temp
Hey Guys,
Don't know if this can eventually be stickied but I think having a thread dedicated to running temps and different parameter readings will be very useful. I bought my car new in 08 and now have 116,xxx miles. A few months ago I bought an iPad mini / dash mount, wifi OBD reader, and run dash command in the car check operating temp while driving. I did a coolant flush when I swapped out the oil filter housing gasket but coolant temp rises to 210+ pretty quickly. Is this normal operating temp? temp was 72 degrees so my intake temp is right. I know 10 degrees above ambient is normal ( I have K&N, charcoal, and silencer delete) This snap shot was taking almost at idle after a 2 hour highway drive.

See this link for a 100 page technical manual for the N52 engine. Then read page 67 about our water pump and the different profiles our engines have. The temps you are seeing are normal and the fact you see it hit this value very quickly is also normal. Our engines reduce/stop completely the flow of coolant to bring the engines up to operating temperature very quickly to save gas and for cabin comfort on cold days.

Edit* read through the whole thing on my way home and feel so much better. Truly understanding this motor gives you a great peace of mind. Anyone retrofit the oil to water heat exchanger that comes on the E60? Also would there be any benefit to running bigger injectors and constantly in high-mapped thermostat mode? The numbers below the pictures have any meaning? Thanks again, this a great to have on hand.

No problem man, I have answered the exact question a few times here. The report is very interesting to see an overview of the different systems from the designers point of view.
