Ripped it , "Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power"

Hey guys,

Yesterday on the highway some scumbag in a genesis kept riding my ass in the centre line and switched lanes when i did so i floored it, not only did i emasculate him, I got this wonderful message saying "Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power".

I sht bricks because I actually felt the car struggling, it wasn't joking about "reduced power".

I was flustered but I had no choice but to continue driving. I went to the gas station to pump up. After all that fun stuff, I checked the engine bay (to pretend I knew what I was looking for) nothing was leaking, smelling, or anything seeming out of place. When I go to start it up it was gone!

Trying to figure out wtf happened, then i remembered earlier in the day I was playing with my speed limit warning, and set it for fun. When i floored it I remember it quickly saying "warning Speed" than something like speed limit high or passed or something than thats when it kicked in.

I bought the 335 for a reason, its a performance car so i dont think giving it a little what its built for would do that much harm... its 09 also..

ANY Input? Ive tried to search it up, nothing but vague answers..

Sounds like a misfire; your car is very likely just fine in the big picture. We’ll need you to pull codes from the DME or this is beyond speculative. All we know is that on WOT your car threw a limp mode.

How do i do that? I checked messages, settings, flipped my menu board inside out. There was nothing pertaining to the "engine malfunction."

This has nothing to do with your speed warning settings.

If the car is no longer under warranty an Indy shop will be able to check your codes.

Sounds like a bad coil, but could be other things as well. I had this happen separately to three coils, and got so tired of it I just had all of them replaced.

If it happens again, just pull off the road, shut the car down and restart.

sweet guys, thanks. Should I drop by a shop for safe measures? Or ride until something else comes up?

If you can drive it without issues it’s likely not a critical issue. Probably just plugs and/or coils that need to be replaced. But again, without codes we’re just guessing.

Well what you need to realize is that the check engine light can be turned on by something as trivial is an air sensor not fully plugged in. If it happens again, I'd check it out, for now just forget it ever happened..

You have some sort of fault code stored in memory. Most autoparts store's scan tools cannot access the memory nor the OEM OBDII side. You'll need a more advanced tool like a professional shop has or BavTech. Common causes are multiple misfires beyond the specified amount in a given period, or a fuel delivery issue. Get the car scanned and see what the code reads. Codes don't give you the exact problem they just indicate at what point down the "stream" in the system the fault occurred and was recognized. These cars like any boosted car when pushed beyond factory specs need additional maintenance, I would change my plugs every 10-12K miles, if not I would start having misfires in under heavy engine loads.

Check your intake pipes. After I had walnut blasting done, same exact thing happened to me on the freeway.

Turns out the shop which did the walnut blasting did not tighten the clamp on the intake pipe and it popped off.

+1 on checking codes with a proper tool. It will tell you where to look. General OBDII scanners wont be able to find this. I know because I tried with mine when this happened and it told me nothing.

Code reader for a BMW

You can get a Bav Tool to read your BMW codes or if
you have time and want to go cheap get a coding cable
and download or buy the software . The coding cable costa
about 100 bucks. It can do more than the bav tool like coding
and is not vin number limited plus you can code.

Another thing that is kind of cute toy is the elm327 bluetooth
module they are going for as low as 10 bucks on ebay . You
need to get the Torque App for your smartphone from the App store.
You can do real time monitoring of engine data with that at least
the stuff available on your OBD port.

This happened to me 2 weeks ago. I had the JB+ installed, it was raining and I was doing below the speed limit in traffic. I got home, uninstalled the JB+ and the light hasn't come back on yet thanks fully. I want to have an indy shop I go to pull the code before taking it into the dealer for a look-see.

I just hit 60k and got the service due alert the week before. I wonder if it's a misfire and if I need plugs or something.

Read codes if not change spark plugs if you havent done them recently.I have the same issue only when I go WOT. Then when I pull over and turn the car off/on it goes away. If it's not the plugs could be coil packs then injectors after that but start off small. Read the codes and go from there
