None of them. Get MHD. Don't bother with JB4, old tech unless you're running a single turbo or some other unique mods. I have a JB4 sitting inside the dme box for a long time just unplugged. You can buy a used one for like $50

Be sure to experience a 30% mix of E85 (on factory LPFP) once you've got the mods you've listed and the JB4 functioning at which point you'll choose map 5. I take comfort from the safety of the JB4.

If you have nothing and want a reliable easy setup, use mhd ots maps. |

I have a 335xi with the same mods and a 135i with upgraded turbos and both run JB4 with MHD BEF(Back End Flash). I would add JB4 if I didn't have it. It still has great features that will save you a headache down the road. With those mods run map 1 on 91 map 2 on 93 octane. As noted get a BEF according to your car and your car will run pretty well. Map 2 is a good tune for 93 that won't overkill your turbos assuming you have stock turbos. For example I run map 6 on the 135 since it has bigger turbos. You would also run map 6 if you want to squeeze more out of your turbos but I would'nt recommend unless they are new as you will stress them.

Not trying to start a flame war, just genuinely interested in learning the benefits. I always dismissed it as an unneeded expense for my needs/goals (MHD OTS S1+) but would gladly continue to use if it one was already installed on my car. |

There’s a few things like only getting full power after your oil has reached 160 degrees and the fact that you don’t have to keep buying or have anyone tune your car to make changes. You can send a log and they’ll tell you what to change and such. Also they don’t charge you and the support is still there. I compare JB4 and MHD to Android and iPhone. Android being the JB4. MHD is now coming out with things that the JB4 has been doing for ages. Plus you can change your setup and change the JB4 accordingly and again have someone help you tune it for free. Guys will also tell you that the faster guys were usually using the JB4 with the back end flash to iron everything out. I haven’t been on the ball with it lately but I know the JB4 gives me the peace of mind and it’s constantly being updated.

also minor for most, but MHD is wifi, and JB4 bluetooth. This and cost make my decision to bef+jb4.
Unless I missed something, I can't share the data with my headunit, so i dont have music streaming nor waze if I want to use MHD gauges, because my cellphone is connected to MHD and not on the headunit. I read a ton about this, they are very similar, but jb4 is cheaper, you can adjust setting on the fly no flash, it's well known. Iirc you can also flash some MHD setting with the BEF, like single bank fueling, antilag, burble, startup low noise, rpm, etc. Only cons, is the support is slow and sometimes non-existent. Back in the days it was a very nice feature to set the tune for free via jb4tech forums. But they are over it now, and it can take up to 2-3 weeks before getting an answer and if you get it. BUT, most issues has been discussed, I took 2-3 hours to read the entire BEF and Single T thread and I learn a lot. if you have more time, more money and want something apparently more reliable go MHD, you can load custom maps. Big pro, it seems to be receiving updates. In 2021 they got major update for the N54. I must say no matter the option, its VERY UNCLEAR what are the pros and cons for each, how to install it and EVEN how to use it ! I dont count my hours on how many video I watched and how many reading I did. To figure that in only 2 forums comments, you need to flash JB4 firmware to match your setup. And a lot of people got this issue by what Ive read. SAme for MHD, I was looking how to flash custom maps and what would be my options, and no info , not even a single tutorial online ! All , I mean ALL tutorials or video are incomplete. and something not the same info. My assumption is when you go custon, more than a OTS flash or a JB4 maps, people go see a tuner, thus no info online. Last edited by oVeRdOsE.; 01-05-2024 at 09:50 AM.. |

I remember for the longest time I had this issue and couldn't figure it out. Turned out I had the menu 4 setting incorrect and it basically was just using the JB4 for gauges.

look, the previous owner sold me the car very cheap, because he had massive turbo lag, and the indy shop thought about a bad turbo, need more investigating. Turns out the JB4 setting were all shit. Boost target over the tmap range, duty bias all at 0, auto shift redux at 60 ( its a manual car), FF way too high at 96, fuel open loop way too high at 92. Tmap setting at 15 ??? (should be 0 or 1) , and 6 cyl timing at 15 (it should be 5 for the DME model). Nothing was wrong with the JB4. It is true that nowadays most post about jb4 is negative, but I have a feeling this is 90% because of the user. Thus the big positive for MHD, it's a flash-n'-forget it. Jb4 should have add a ''dummy'' page to load basic and safe config according to owner modification (some what like a flash). With config file available with a small descriptive under a clear menu in the app. The advance tab should be filled up automatically and 'harder' to mess with, like with tons of pop-ups about 'are you sure doing this or that ?' I shared logs and settings back and forth on the other forum with Burger. I'd pick up a little bit but my car never made the power it should.
