Considering 2007 E90 335i to 2004 E46 M3

Hi guys,

I have a friend whose lease is up in a couple of months now. He currently owns a 325i and is considering to get a 335i. I've offered to let him take over my lease which is a 07 E90 335i.

So I'm currently shopping for a 04-06 M3, Alpine White, Interlagos Blue or Black.

I'm just wondering if anyone has done this before, going from a 335i to a M3, whether or not you noticed a decrease/increase in power, a sacrifice in comfort, or in general, sacrifice of technology and your thoughts.

Thanks!

It's usually the other way around but you should do what you like IMHO. I mean for me, even though I have a 335, I still drool over the E46 M3 whenever I see it on the road.

My buddy has an 04 E46 M3 with some bolt ons. We switch cars every now and again. They are by no means similar. A 335 is a fast, smooth, quiet, and tuneable 3 series. An M3 is fast, loud, stiff, tight, and tuneable in a whole different manner. Neither one is better than the other but, they each do certain things better. Doing 80 in an M3 feels faster than doing 130 in a 335 but, the M3 handles higher speeds much better than the 335. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Do whatever makes you feel better. The M3's always gonna be special in its own sort of way, and will undoubtedly be the more engaging drive from day to day. The only thing you really have to put up with is the fact that it might look outdated (whether or not that translates to uglier is a matter of one's own opinion) in comparison to your e90, but I personally think the e46 coupe is a timeless design. Interior-wise, what you lose in modernity you make up for in function and driver-orientation. The engine won't suit day to day traffic as well as the N54, but I'm sure that it'll be a fair trade once you find that one empty carving road.

You really can't go wrong either way. Have fun hunting.

I had an 2004 E46 M3 for 2 years before switching to a Cayman S and then just now to a E36 M3 for track and E90 335i for dd. I loved the E46 M3 and was seriously considering getting another instead of the 335i, but after looking for a few months I couldn't find one that had exactly what I wanted (and I kind of wanted a sedan) so I went with the 335.

Both are great cars in thier own way. Definitely drive both. If you do end up with an M3 I would really look for one with competition package. If they had ZCP in 2004 I never would have sold mine in the first place.

Don't do it Des, you'll miss the torque of your car. Yours is every bit as fast the M3, and it is 3 years newer. This is a case of the grass being greener..but it's not. Also, for the type of climate we live in, the 335 is a better daily driver wrt ride.

I had an 05 M3 with the competition pkg before the 335. I can tell you that BOTH cars are great, and you really can't go wrong. If you switch to the E46 M3 from a 335, then you will miss the comfort and amenities of the 335. If you switch from the M3 to the 335 (like I did), then you will miss the feeling of driving (the rawness). Personally, if my M3 wasn't taken from me by some douche running a red light, I would have kept her for years without even glancing at a 335. Don't ask me why I didn't just get another...long story.

If you like comfort and gadgets, then stick with the 335. If you like just driving and carving up the streets, then consider the E46 M3. I LOVED canyon carving in the M....the 335 hasn't gained my confidence just yet to do so, but I'm sure the time will come soon.

PS - I had the E46 M3 as a DD, and it was fine. Good luck, and just realize how fortunate you are to have such a decision that many less fortunate people don't.

if you could put the E92 interior in the E46, THEN you'd have a killer car.

No way. The driver-oriented E46 interior is where it's at. The only improvement for the E9x interior is the stereo.

Jaws> you're right man, I took a look at an 04 M3, and it was just way too dated for me. The only other choice would be an 06 one, but even that will be the same price as a 335i and 1 year older. I've decided to keep it (the 335i). I'm happy about my decision.

Now my friend is looking at a 2004 745i, 46,XXX kms, $40k. Sounds sketchy I know, we're going to test-drive/check history after work.
