You've not had your car that long, have you?

Are you sure that the wings are original?

Loads of 9 year old cars have had bumps and paint. It would hardly be a surprise if that was the case here especially since it is the front wings.

If its had a new wing then there should be even less chance of rust as it will be newer

I wouldn't agree with that. You've no idea how well a new wing has been done.

It might be a cheap non genuine replacement part and not prepared and painted to a high enough standard.

Could be loads of reasons.

If there was no rust present when you bought the car, that is a very aggressive attack of rust. Rust seems to come through slowly and take a while to develop. You've got a large affected area.

It is rare to see rust on modern cars. Usually the ones that I have seen with rust have had poor repairs.

The strange thing is, I only washed it on Thursday and I didn't notice it then!
Ive always been very meticulous with arches thanks to my days of owning Fords and Vauxhalls

Oh well, my car is getting mapped tomorrow at my mates garage, he is a sprayer by trade, so will see what he says.
I'd rather pay and get him to do it than let it go anywhere near a main dealers!

The only place on the wings I've had rust is from stone chips after using winter tyres. The deep tread catches big stones and hurls them at the wings. I touched them in with a rust converter, a zinc primer and paint. Then I cover the inside and outside lip of the wings with a wax from bilt hamber.

I bought my car from yorkshire and the amount of surface rust on the chassis was alarming. A quick wash, wire brush and underbody wax sorted it. But it does seem like the winters previous to last took their toll with the amount of salt thrown about.

I'm not even sure galvanizing helps either. I've seen a lot of similar aged golfs - 2005/2006 with rusty wings.

It helps a lot because the rust only ever gets to surface stage ansd never rots.
I had 1995 Audi S2's with no rust at all!

there could be any number of reasons for that but it does look pretty bad. Just get it fixed on mates rates and forget about it. Hopefully it won't cost you too much.

If it has set on that quick you don't want it to get any worse.

I've had the car 16 months or so, this is the first time I've noticed anything at all!
It's not the end of the world, just frustrating on a car that's not really that old

I second that. I have seen a car dropped and one of the wing was replaced with non-genuine replacement part. And rust started.
So it was combination of dropped car (tyre hitting the arch), non genuine replacement part and perhaps poor body work.

I also think this. My e92 has plastic wing. And my boss has e91 and that is plastic front wing to.
